Directed by Chris Sanders
Hey I love my poop and fart jokes in animated films as much as the next guy. But the endless pop culture references and tedious music needle drops gets boring and one longs for something with more depth and meaning for the children.
DreamWorks Animation and Chris Sanders' new film is just what the doctor ordered. THE WILD ROBOT is a gorgeously animated little fairy tale filled with so much heart and humor. A story about Roz, a robot stranded on an uninhabited island as she learns to live with the wildlife and becomes adopted mother to an orphaned little goose.
I was particularly surprised by how strong the voice performances were from top to bottom. Pedro Pascal as a (not so) mischievous red fox and Kit Connor (the "hot" one from HEARTSTOPPER) as the orphaned goose are the main supporting cast and you can really feel how seriously they took the roles bringing real emotion and grounding the performances. Supporting characters by Catherine O'Hara, Mark Hamill, Stephani Hsu and Ving Rhames all bring in flavor and humor.
But besides the absolutely stunning animation that while CGI still brings in storybook and watercolor elements, the star is (no surprise here) Lupita Nyong'o as the titular robot. It's a masterclass in voice acting, just hilarious and fascinating as Roz learns and adapts to her surroundings.
One of the best movies of the year and excellent counter programming to what's out. Its like a warm hug from your mom. One of the best of the year!
