Directed by Steven C. Miller
One year ago a supermoon triggered a dormant gene in every human on earth, turning them into a WEREWOLF if they're exposed to moonlight even for a second. Almost a billion people died and now a year later the supermoon has returned...
And so the opening title cards of WEREWOLVES brings us up to speed as the movie starts on an unspecified town getting ready for the night. The action-horror creature feature stars Frank Grillo as a former soldier and current top molecular biologist (!) as he tries to keep his family safe while also developing a cure called "moonscreen" (Coppertone girl better watch out!)
The second the movie opens and we see Lou Diamond Phillips delivering a press conference info dump for the audience, I knew we were in good hands. Almost a spiritual sequel to his other creature schlockfest, 1999's BATS (a movie me and the whole family saw opening night), LDP delivers all his lines with the utmost seriousness. Total professional.
Not totally sure why Frank Grillo is a star, he is serviceable enough in the action scenes but completely devoid of charm or charisma. Looking like a chewed up piece of turkey jerky, he ain't no Statham that's for sure! But we're here for some damn good werewolf-sploitation and boy does it deliver. I noticed very little CGI, instead lots and lots of practical effects ranging from goofy to creepy. There's violence and gore and laughs and then clocks out at just about 90 minutes.
Bring on the sequel AWOOOOOOO
