The Crow

THE CROW

Directed by Rupert Sanders

It’s already a daunting task to take a popular comic and adapt it into a movie. Even harder when it's already been done before in 1994's goth cult classic THE CROW. But ok, the story of a man coming back from the dead to avenge his slain lover and given supernatural powers has potential for a different interesting take. Instead we are given a totally trashy (in NOT a good way) and completely uninspired schlock.

Bill Skarsgård (Pennywise from the modern IT movies) stars as Eric, a troubled man in a correctional facility. One day Shelly (FKA Twigs) shows up and it's love at first. They soon run off and start a rather fun degenerate love story. They make love and party and share intimate moments together. These scenes play out rather nicely, thanks in huge part to FKA Twigs. Looking gorgeous and ethereal with an aura energy that is undeniable, she is impossible to look away from.

But soon the creaky plot mechanics kick in and we're thrust into the tale of violence and revenge. Skarsgård, covered in tattoos that make him look like a SoundCloud rapper, is doing his best to stay afloat but the movie does him no favors. Director Rupert Sanders brings nothing new or fresh to the whole picture, instead just shuffling from the same couple drab locations with increasing tasteless violence. Seriously the CGI blood is just lame as hell.

It's boring and predictable, and offers nothing fresh or even a point of view. Hopefully FKA Twigs can land more roles after this I would very much like to see more of her, the rest can be dumped on a streaming platform to never be heard from again.
