COMPANION
COMPANION
Written and Directed by Drew Hancock
You know how we rely on technology for everything right? It's only a matter of time before we get those dating sex robots they've been promising us for years. The new film COMPANION posits a world where those robots, called Companions, not only exist but are easily available to the market.
One of those robots, Iris, seems to go haywire on a weekend getaway trip leaving a bloody trail of destruction behind. Don't be fooled by the trailers though! Not everything is what it seems, especially from her "boyfriend" played by Jack Quaid. Much less of a horror movie and more of a sci-fi thriller romcom where people die, above all else this is a really funny movie. Way more laughs then expected, especially from super cute gay couple played by Lukas Gage (so hot) & Harvey Guillén (so adorable).
Light on social commentary and doesn't try to be any more clever than it is, writer/director Drew Hancock let's the dynamite premise and terrific committed actors do their thing. Sophie Thatcher as Iris is impressive and a blast to watch as she covers the gamut of emotions and Quaid has totally perfected that smarmy bro archetype he's so good at playing.
There's a good amount of eye rolls especially at chunks of melodramatic dialogue, but I couldn't stop chuckling. The best revenge thriller sci-fi romcom of the year! Be careful how you treat your sexbots.
